Has Cosmetic Surgery become normalised by the media?

It is the view of some health officials that the “booming” cosmetic surgery industry has now evolved to an “everyday product” due to celebrities and due to TV programmes such as The Only Way is Essex, and Housewives of Orange County.  These type of series tend to normalise and trivialise cosmetic surgery and cosmetic surgery procedures, such as Botox and dermal filler injections.

An independent review into cosmetic procedures has now recently concluded that cosmetic interventions have become “normalised”.

The group said there has been a “trivialisation” of procedures – influenced by TV programmes such as Towie, various social medias and glossy magazines.

Plastic surgeon Simon Withey, who also sat on the review board, stated that:: “Part of the reason there hasn’t been a change (following the PIP implant troubles) is because there has been this trivialisation of plastic surgery.”

“I do think shows like this (Towie) do contribute towards this trivialisation and that failure to inform the public that there are risks and implications for these things” advised Simon.

Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS medical director, who chaired the review, added: “(An) area that is problematic is the trivialisation of cosmetic procedures – TV, magazines, social media, the internet – they all normalise it.”

“They have turned cosmetic interventions into an everyday product.”

In 2010, the UK public spent £2.3 billion on cosmetic procedures such as non surgical treatments like Botox, to breast augmentation procedures. Nine out of ten cosmetic procedures were actually non surgical treatments such as injectable anti-wrinkle injections. .

At Liverpool Cosmetic Clinic in Merseyside, we believe that Cosmetic Surgery or non surgical treatments are potentially life changing and to be taken extremely serious, with plenty of research being done on selecting the most appropriate Cosmetic Surgeon for your procedure.
