Rhinoplasty Surgery (Nose Re-Shaping)

Reasons for nose re-shaping surgery

You may feel that the size and shape of your nose is out of proportion to your face or perhaps you are unhappy with the shape of the tip, a lump on the bridge, the profile of the nose or the angle between the nose and the upper lip. These aspects can be addressed by the Rhinoplasty procedure, commonly referred to as a “nose job”. The characteristics of the nose are genetic and as the nose is a central feature of the face, it is important to take into consideration the other facial features such as the eyes, chin, cheeks and facial shape. The nose does not normally stop growing until around the age of 16, therefore this procedure is not normally recommended before this age. The Rhinoplasty operation is commonly performed and may enhance self-esteem or confidence to a patient who is unhappy or embarrassed by the size or shape of their nose, or who has suffered an accident which has changed or damaged the nose.

The Operation

At Liverpool Cosmetic Clinic we offer the Rhinoplasty or nose job surgery which can be performed using an “open” or “closed” technique which is independently assessed according each patient, depending on the individual framework of the nose. The overlying skin of the nose itself is not touched and the frame of the nose, consisting of cartilage (gristle) and bone is removed to re shape and to adjust the profile of the nose. When using the closed method, incisions are made within the nostrils and the procedure is carried out via this access point. When using the open method, the incision is made to the columella (the tissue which separates the nostril) in addition to within the nose. The elasticity of the nasal skin then shrinks and fits to the new reduced framework of the nose.

In the case of an augmentation rhinoplasty (enlargement), the shape of the nose is built up using various materials such as cartilage, bone or manufactured materials. The additional framework is performed using cuts to either the columella or inside the nostrils.

Initially the nose may feel stiff, appearing swollen and bruised for approximately 2-3 weeks, with residual swelling being apparent for up to 3 months. As the bruising and swelling normally subsides in 2-3 weeks, daily activities can normally be undertaken at this point. It is fairly common to experience breathing difficulties for the first week after surgery and you may be advised to wear a splint for approximately 1 week post-surgery.

Rhinoplasty surgery FAQ

Will I have scars following nose job surgery?

Most rhinoplasty surgery incisions are made inside the nostrils, therefore the scars are concealed. For an open rhinoplasty procedure, your surgeon may make an incision in the skin between your nostrils. You may also require small incisions to be made at either side of your nostrils, which will leave very fine scars.

How will I feel following the procedure?

After your nose job operation, you will experience bruising and swelling, particularly around the eyes, which normally subsides over approximately 2-4 weeks. Your nose will initially feel numb and stiff, which normally eases over a couple of months. You may have dressings in each nostril and a protective splint fitted for approximately 1 week following surgery. Most closed rhinoplasty procedures take approximately 2 weeks to settle down, however if your nose is broken there will be more bruising around the eyes for longer. Open rhinoplasty surgery typically takes 4-6 weeks to healing.

When can I drive following nose corrective surgery?

Your surgeon will normally recommend resuming driving approximately 10 days after surgery has been performed, to assist with recovery and for insurance purposes.

How long after surgery should I exercise?

You are advised to not to commence strenuous exercise until approximately 6 weeks following your nose reshaping procedure.

Further benefits, risks and your expectations will be discussed and explained during your consultation with a fully registered Consultant Plastic Surgeon.
