Breast enlargement is a popular surgical procedure. Also known as breast augmentation, breast implants, mammoplasty or more colloquially as a boob job, thousands of women undergo the procedure every year in the UK.
Figures from BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) revealed that 7,769 women in the UK underwent breast augmentation surgery in 2016, making it the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure carried out.
What is a boob job?
The procedure involves placing an artificial breast implant in each breast to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. The implant can be placed either under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle behind the breast, depending on patient preference.
Why are boob jobs performed?
Many women are unsatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts and find it affects their self-esteem. Having small breasts can be genetic, but many other factors can affect the size of the breasts – including weight loss and pregnancy. Some women also undergo breast enlargement surgery due to having one breast larger than the other.
What to expect when undergoing breast enlargement surgery
Breast enlargement surgery typically takes one to two hours and is usually performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make incisions in the breast skin, typically in the crease under the breast, around the nipple or towards the armpit.
Most women choose to have the implant put under the breast tissue on top of the muscle, but some women opt to have it put under the chest muscle. When the implant is placed under the chest muscle it makes it less obvious that implants are present, but this technique often results in more pain and more postoperative downtime. You can discuss with the surgeon which method is best for you.
What to expect postoperatively
Drains may be placed in each breast to drain out excess fluid, and the breasts will be put in a supportive dressing. It will be necessary to have a week or two off work, and heavy lifting and strenuous exercise must be avoided for a period of around a month.
Stitches are removed after about a week, unless dissolvable stitches are used.
