Botox Wrinkle Relaxing Treatment

Reasons for Botox treatment

You may be seeking a more youthful appearance and wish to address the lines and wrinkles to the face and neck caused by the ageing process, or from natural sagging due the effect of gravity, causing skin to lose its elasticity and slacken the muscles. Sun exposure, smoking, lifestyle and stress can all influence the rate at which we appear to age, with facial expressions such as laughing and frowning contributing to the formation of lines. Botulinum toxin is used for Botox injections, which can be extremely effective at diminishing lines and wrinkles caused by muscle contraction, thus producing an overall improved appearance with a more youthful look. For fine line, forehead lines, frown lines and crows feet, Botox treatment can be particularly successful in reducing the visible effects of ageing and therefore may assist in enhancing self-esteem and confidence.

The Botox treatment

Botulinum Toxin is a product produced from a bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum, which was first used in 1978 during the treatment to weaken overactive eye muscles and was then used for cosmetic reasons ie: muscle contraction lines in 1990. Botox works by blocking a chemical called acetylcholine, responsible for transmitting electrical impulses which cause muscle contraction.

At Liverpool Cosmetic and Aesthetic Clinic, our highly trained Doctors and Cosmetic Surgeons take time to understand the requirements of our patients and provide expert advice on wrinkle relaxing Botox treatment.

What results can be expected?

The Botox treatment normally takes approximately 30 minutes in clinic and the effect from Botox treatment normally activates from 24-72 hours post treatment, reaching maximum effect at approximately 1-2 weeks.

How long does the treatment last?

The results from Botox wrinkle relaxing injections normally last for approximately 3-4 months, fading naturally and gradually and when this is observed, you may opt to have another treatment. There is no recommended down time for Botox treatment, but you may have slight reddening of the injected area initially and you may be given some post treatment instructions to follow.

Botox Treatment FAQ

Is the treatment safe?

Botulinum Toxin has an excellent safety record during use in medicine and as a muscle relaxant. It has been used successfully in both adults and children, treating a variety medical conditions over the last 20 years. Botox has been used for approximately 15 years cosmetically, to treat facial wrinkles and has become one of the most popular and frequently used cosmetic aesthetic UK treatments.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Botox injections are performed using a very fine needle and are relatively painless, therefore anaesthesia is not necessary. A typical treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to perform with no down time required and you are able to drive following treatment.

How long do the effects of the treatment last?

The Botox cosmetic treatment can take up to 14 days until the full effects are visible. The effects last on average 3-4 months and most patients opt for a further treatment once wrinkles reappear. Patients may notice less wrinkles and lines following several treatments.

Are there any side effects following treatment?

It is crucial that you select a highly trained medical aesthetic practitioner to perform your treatment.  Most patients only experience mild local pain and tenderness from Botulinum injections with possible swelling at the injection site, which usually subsides within 48 hours.  Slight bruising is also possible however side effects and allergic reactions are rare.  Occasionally, the treatment may cause temporary drooping of the eyelid/eyebrow.  If this occurs, it may last for a few weeks but resolves gradually. How long is recommended between treatments?

We advise that a minimum interval of 3 months is left between each Botox treatment. Once the effects gradually wear off, the wrinkles will return to their pre-treatment appearance, however the effects may last longer for some patients, especially if they have had treatment to the same area previously.
