Breast enlargement and cosmetic procedures covered by insurance in the UKPublished on 29th May 2013

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have announced that they are to provide an insurance to patients who undergo plastic surgery procedures with accredited Plastic Surgeons.

The decision follows a review into cosmetic surgery by a panel headed by Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director. Many UK clinicians are of the opinion that there is a UK cosmetic crisis, simply waiting to happen.

.

BAAPS stated that “The ‘Aesthetic Surgery Commitment’ or ‘ASC’ policy (www.asurgerycommitment.com) is groundbreaking in that not only does it cover corrective treatment of all the most common complications of surgery (such as infection or bleeding) but also – a world first – capsular contracture, an abnormal reaction of the body to breast implants. Up to one in ten women who’ve undergone breast augmentation may develop this condition, but historically would have had to pay for corrective surgery themselves.”

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has joined forces with Lloyds of London, who are a specialist insurance firm, and who aim to introduce an insurance policy, covering patients of surgeons who are part of the association. The price of cover will be incorporated in the quote for surgery and will be active for two years post operatively.

The ‘‘Aesthetic Surgery Commitment’ (ASC) policy will cover corrective treatment of surgery complications such as bleeding, infection and will cover capsular contracture, which can occur as a result of breast implants.

Typically one in ten women who have the breast augmentation procedure can develop this condition, and historically they have had to fund any necessary corrective surgery themselves to rectify the problem.

BAAPS President Rajiv Grover said: “In line with Sir Bruce Keogh’s recommendations for more safeguards in the aesthetic surgery sector, we are [launching] a truly innovative insurance package that will further protect our patients.”

‘No procedure is risk-free and ASC covers all common complications, so people undergoing surgery with BAAPS members can enjoy peace of mind that they will be looked after, in the unlikely event of any problems.”

At Liverpool Cosmetic Clinic, we are extremely pleased with the revoluntionery concept announced by the BAAPS, and the positive effect that this will have on patients undergoing cosmetic surgery in the UK.  This means that in the near future, our patients in Liverpool, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire will have extra peace of mind.
