EU Prevents Cosmetic Surgery Cowboy Clampdown – Dermal Fillers And BotoxPublished on 24th February 2014

The NHS Medical Director for England, Sir Bruce Keogh has been pushing for reforms on legislation for cosmetic surgery in the UK.

According to Sir Bruce Keogh, and many leading UK cosmetic and plastic surgeons, anti ageing injections such as dermal fillers (eg: Juvederm, Restylane) and botulinum injections (eg: Botox, Vistabel, Azzalure) should be classified as prescription only.

The UK plastic surgery organisations (BAAPS & BAPRAS) and the government also support this view to legislate dermal fillers and Botox.  This would mean that as these products would be prescriptive, only qualified clinical practitioners such as cosmetic surgeons, plastic surgeons and doctors would be able to treat patients.  Unfortunately the EU is currently preventing these measures coming into force.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Professor Keogh said: EU rules appear to mean we cannot make fillers prescription-only medicines.

‘I strongly believe more patients will be protected from cosmetics cowboys if we make it much more difficult for them to get their hands on them in the first place.’

Sir Bruce also called for ‘socially irresponsible’ advertising practices to be banned by professional codes of practice.

These include time-limited special offers, cash inducements, buy-one-get-one-free deals or mother and daughter deals, refer a friend deals and offering surgery as competition prizes.
