Nose Surgery LiverpoolPublished on 13th August 2019
Cosmetic nose surgery to alter the shape of the nose is known as rhinoplasty, and it is available in Liverpool with our renowned surgeon Mr Rob Laycock. This kind of nose surgery is a very popular plastic surgery procedure which can transform a patient’s facial appearance. Surgery to reshape the nose, colloquially referred to as a ‘nose job’, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures carried out in the UK. This is largely due to the high levels of patient satisfaction associated with surgery.
What is a rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery operation carried out to improve the appearance of the nose. Although it is widely considered to be a mainly cosmetic procedure, it is sometimes carried out as a reconstructive procedure to restore the form and functions of the nose. Rhinoplasty can have medical benefits, including alleviating breathing trouble, widening the airways and correcting a deviated septum.
Why do people have nose surgery?
Many people are unhappy with the appearance of their nose. Often, the nose is considered too big or is misshapen. Some people have a lump on the bridge of their nose that they consider unsightly, others want to alter just the tip. The nose might be out of proportion to the rest of the face, it may have a ‘hooked’ appearance, or the tip of the nose may be too close to the lips.
No two noses are the same, and patients have their own reasons for considering rhinoplasty surgery.
Some patients may have been unhappy with the appearance of their nose since childhood, others will have suffered an accident or trauma that changed the nose and altered its appearance.
Whatever the reason for seeking nose surgery, undergoing a rhinoplasty surgery can boost confidence and self-esteem and completely change an individual’s appearance.
The operation
At Liverpool Cosmetic Clinic we offer nose job surgery via both the “open” and “closed” techniques. Every patient is different, and your surgeon Mr Akhtar will discuss with you which method is best for you to achieve the outcome you want.
The closed technique involves incisions being made inside the nostrils. The open technique involves an incision being made in the columella (the tissue separating the nostrils) as well as the incisions inside the nostrils.
Both types of rhinoplasty surgery are carried out under general anaesthetic usually, but can, rarely, be carried out under local anaesthetic.
Surgery usually takes between 90 minutes and 3 hours. Most patients stay in hospital overnight.
Aftercare
Again, every patient is different, but it is expected that everyone who undergoes nose surgery will have some swelling and bruising. Patients should be prepared for bruising and swelling to be evident around and under the eyes as well as the nose. This typically lasts 2-3 weeks, but residual swelling can persist for up to 3 months.
Patients leave hospital with dressings in each nostril, and it is common to have to wear a splint which usually needs to remain in place for about 7 days.
In order the reduce swelling and speed up recovery time, it’s a good idea to remain upright for a while, and to prop your head up on pillows for at least a few days after surgery. After bruising and swelling has subsided, normal activities can be resumed, although vigorous exercise and contact sports are to be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
Open rhinoplasty typically has a longer recovery time of up to 6 weeks, but this is carried out much less frequently than the closed rhinoplasty procedure.
Mild pain can be expected which can be treated with paracetamol or similar over-the-counter medication.
The final results of the rhinoplasty are typically seen in 6 months to a year postoperatively.
