Tummy tuck surgery Manchester: Do you want a flatter, firmer, and tighter stomach? If so, this procedure might be for you.
What is it?
Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat from the stomach and tightening the abdominal muscles.
Tummy tuck surgery isn’t for everyone though and it isn’t appropriate for someone who wants to reduce a few pounds from their belly. Rather, it is appropriate for those who’ve been left with lax skin and an unsightly abdominal area after significant weight loss. Vast ad rapid weight loss often leaves fat pockets and saggy skin which can be problematic.
Abdominoplasty surgery can also address stretch marks. Some stretch marks can be completely removed, and others made less noticeable. Tummy tuck surgery streamlines the entire abdominal area resulting in a flatter and firmer appearance.

Who can have tummy tuck surgery?
It’s a common surgery for ladies to request post pregnancy because pregnancy often causes the abdominal muscles to become weakened and the skin lax. This is particularly true after multiple pregnancies. Abdominoplasty is commonly associated with the “mommy makeover” and can restore the pre-pregnancy appearance of the abdomen.
Tummy tuck surgery addresses very stubborn areas of fat and loose skin that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. Although some weight loss does occur post-surgery due to the removal of excess skin and fat, it is not a weight loss procedure per se and is therefore unsuitable for anyone whose goal is solely weight loss.
Those who’ve undergone tummy tuck surgery will typically lose anything from a couple of pounds to ten pounds on the scales, but they will be visually leaner and more toned because of the tightening and smoothing effect of the surgery. There will be an improved silhouette and patients will probably drop at least a dress size, some may drop several.
Abdominoplasty candidates are typically within a normal weight range or just above. It is important to emphasise that tummy tuck surgery is not a procedure that addresses obesity.
Other benefits of abdominoplasty surgery
As well as the aesthetic reasons for undergoing a tummy tuck, other benefits, such as improvement in posture, have been noted. This is because weak abdominal muscles don’t support the spine effectively, and when these muscles are tightened, it has an effect of ‘straightening’ the spine. The increased support for the spine and improved posture can help relieve back pain.
Tummy tuck surgery is very popular and is associated with very high patient satisfaction, with the vast majority of patients very pleased with the results of their surgery.
What does surgery involve?
It’s important not to regard tummy tuck surgery as trivial though because of its popularity. It is major surgery, requiring between 2 and 4 hours on the operating table. As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, bleeding, and of complications relating to general anaesthesia. It is not an operation that should be underestimated or trivialised.
During surgery, an incision is made hip to hip along the pubic area as well as around the belly button. Excess skin and fat are then removed, and drains are usually placed which remain in situ for two days postoperatively. A two-night hospital stay is typically required.
What happens postoperatively?
It can take several weeks to recover from surgery, typically around 6 weeks to fully resume pre-operative activities. It’s important to remain gently active once discharged from hospital, being careful not to place too much strain on the muscles or stitches which will be sore initially.
The results of tummy tuck surgery are permanent but it’s important to bear in mind that further weight gain, pregnancy, and weight loss can affect surgical outcome long-term.
